Children travelling alone
The first time your child flies on their own it can be a bit nerve-racking, for your child and for you too. KLM provides a service for unaccompanied minors that takes care of kids from check-in to arrival, between 5 and 14 years of age this is obliged. The service can be requested for children that are 15 till 17 years old as well. We will also keep an eye on your children if they are travelling in a different class. This gives you the peace of mind of knowing that your child is in safe hands throughout the trip.

Simply Dutch and English

Our crew speak Dutch and English, which is nice for the children, but also for you, because it means you are not on your own throughout the flight. We are ready to answer all your little adventurer’s questions, both when on the ground and in the air.

Travelling together, seated together

Travelling together, seated together

Your safety and convenience are important to us. We always endeavour to seat families together. If it’s impossible, we will do our best to ensure each child is sitting next to an adult from your group. If you want to ensure that all family members get to sit together, you can reserve your seats for a small fee during the booking process. Please note: 1 adult can travel with a maximum of 12 children under 15 years old. Children younger than 2 years old on both your departure and return flight will travel sitting on your lap. Rest assured that we select the most comfortable and safe seating areas when you are travelling with your baby. Every adult may travel with 2 babies, but only 1 baby may sit on your lap. For the other, you need to book an extra seat. Please contact us for this.
Check-in

Check-in

Give your next trip a flying start by checking the whole family in online before you leave from home. Especially in the busy school holiday period this will make your journey more comfortable. We can then ensure that all the family are sitting together in the aircraft and email you your boarding passes. The online check-in starts 30 hours before your flight is due to depart (24 hours for flights to and from the United States). We will send you a reminder message by email. More information is available here.

Baggage

Small children, large baggage

Small children, large baggage

Travelling with young children often involves taking lots of extra baggage. From pushchairs to cribs, here’s all the information you need to make your trip go smoothly.
Kids & cases
If you are travelling with an infant (below two years of age) on a KLM flight, you may bring 12 kg of hand baggage. Do you prefer to keep everything in one place? Please note that check-in baggage containing both your own and your baby’s belongings may be checked in at our baggage drop desk according to your ticket conditions. Children who have their own seat may bring the same amount of check-in and hand baggage as an adult. Check My Trip to see how much check-in baggage you are allowed to bring with you.
Special baggage for children

Special baggage for children

You can bring one folding stroller (15 x 30 x 100 cm) and one child seat or baby carrier per child on board of every KLM flight. The baby carrier must be checked in as checked bagage. The child seat and stroller are allowed on board, provided they comply with a number of rules. If the stroller does not fit under the seat or in the overhead compartment, you can check it in free of charge or hand it over to the KLM staff at the gate so it can be placed in the hold. Both the baby carrier and stroller may have a protective cover, but it may not contain any additional baggage.

Baggage
If your child has its own (booked) seat, he/she may bring the same amount of hand baggage and check-in baggage as an adult, including a collapsible buggy and a car/child seat.

For a child younger than 2 years of age who will be travelling on your lap, you may bring:

• 1 piece of hand baggage with baby care items weighing max. 12 kg (26 lbs) and with dimensions max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm (22 x 14 x 10 in).
• 1 collapsible buggy (read the extra information below)
• 1 car/child seat
• The check-in baggage allowance for a child travelling on your lap depends on your ticket type. Read more about ticket types, or check the exact baggage details on your ticket and in My Trip.
• Some of our partner airlines have different baggage rules to our own. Please contact your travel agency or the airline concerned for further details.

Buggy
For each child you may always bring 1 collapsible buggy free of charge on any KLM flight. If the buggy (of max. 15 x 30 x 100 cm (6 x 12 x 39 in) will not fit under the seat or in the overhead baggage compartment, you can check it in at no extra charge. Where facilities allow for it, you may wheel your child in the tagged buggy to the departure gate. At the gate, the buggy must be handed in for loading. The buggy/pram may have a protective cover but this may not contain any other items.

Car/child seat
For each child, including infants travelling on your lap, you may always bring 1 car/child seat free of charge on KLM flights. If you booked a seat for your child, we recommend that you bring your own car/child seat on board.

• The car/child seat must be able to fit between the armrests of the aircraft seat, which is 42 cm (16.5 in) wide.
• Your child and the child seat need to be secured according to the seat manufacturer’s instructions.
• During take-off and landing child seats may be secured in a rear facing position. At cruising altitude they must be placed  forward facing to allow recline of the seat in front.
• The car seat may not block the recline possibility of the seat in front.
• A child seat may show no defects and must be approved and visibly certified for air transport.
• You will need to reserve the use of a car/child seat in advance. Please contact KLM Telephone Reservations or your local KLM ticket office.

You may also check in the car/child seat free of charge, in which case above rules do not apply.

If you have booked a seat for your child on a KLM flight, you may also use a Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES) on board:

• Your child and the CARES need to be secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
• The CARES may show no defects and must be approved for air transport and marked accordingly.
• You will need to reserve the use of the CARES in advance. Please contact KLM Telephone Reservations or your local KLM  ticket office.

Booking a carrycot

Booking a carrycot

A long flight can be exhausting for both you and your infant. We therefore provide the option of booking a carrycot on all intercontinental flights (subject to availability). You can do this via My Trip or by contacting us directly. To make use of our carrycots, your child should be no taller than 65 cm and weigh no more than 10 kg on the day of travel. During the flight, you can also make use of legrest extensions, as long as they are not attached directly to the seat.

Inflight bed/legrest extension
If you booked a seat for your child, you may bring an inflight bed/legrest extension (e.g. Wick, BedBox, Fly Tot, 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow, Plane Pal). Such device is allowed as long as it is also not attached directly to the seat.

An inflight bed/legrest extension is not allowed on an exit row, bulkhead and Business Class seat. Inflight bed/legrest extensions that are attached to the seat (e.g. Fly LegsUp or FlyeBaby) are also not permitted.

Please note
that it may not be used during take-off, taxiing or landing and it may not impede other passengers. For your child’s safety, we advise not to use the child’s tray table for any hot beverages or meals. Also, please make sure your child’s head is pointing towards the tail of the aircraft, in order to be able to use the safety belt properly.

Entertainment & food

Not a peep out of the children

Not a peep out of the children

It’s not always easy to keep children calm during the entire flight. To give you a helping hand, we provide children with a tasty children's meal, films and games, and we do all we can to make flying as pleasant as possible for them.
Bluey, especially for children

Bluey, especially for children

Do you know our mascot Bluey? He travels with your children, at the airport and on board! All children over two years old get a nice surprise from Bluey. On intercontinental KLM flights, they get a complete Bluey play set. They will also get a Bluey eye mask so they can take a nap. On European fights, children receive a passport holder and a Bluey activity book.
Movies and games on board

Movies and games on board

On intercontinental KLM flights, children can have hours of fun with Bluey on our inflight entertainment system. Lots of movies and video games in various languages will make the time simply fly by! You are also free to bring your own tablet or portable game console – just remember to set it to flight mode while airborne.
Tasty, free children’s meals
If you order a meal 24 hours before your intercontinental flight, we will treat your child to free mini hamburgers and chips. The menu depends on the flight, but our mascot Bluey and a pilot game or flying licence for young pilots will make every kids’ meal a feast! If you are travelling with an infant, remember to bring your own baby food. This is not subject to limitations on liquids brought into the cabin. On intercontinental flights, we offer a limited selection of special baby meals free of charge, together with a gift of a Bluey bib!

Travelling together

Travelling together

If you are travelling with your child or children and they have a different surname to you, then take your marriage certificate or birth certificate (or certificates) as proof of your relationship. For travel to South Africa your child might need to bring various documents, regardless if they travel with both or one parent(s), with an accompanying adult or alone.

Vaccinations & medications
Well begun is half done, so check the safety status of the relevant destination and the need for vaccinations before booking. You can bring medications on board as long as they are marked with your name. If you need to bring more than 100 ml of liquids on board, you also need a doctor’s note.

Directly from A to B

Crossing the airport once is more than enough with your family in tow. So it is great that we fly directly, so with no transfers, to various destinations worldwide. Check our current overview to see for which destinations you can now book a flight.
